TOEIC® Speaking and Writing

The TOEIC Speaking and Writing test is a valid assessment of English-language speaking and writing skills for business.

It is offered in Public Test Sessions several times a year, in certain Canadian cities.

Businesses and schools can also offer the TOEIC Speaking and Writing test to their clientele in corporate or institutional sessions.

Detailed Description

TOEIC means Test of English for International Communication. The TOEIC Speaking and Writing test is a one-hour computer-based assessment. Test takers speak and write in English and give their responses to real-world questions and scenarios divided into two timed sections.

The Speaking section takes 20 minutes to complete and includes 11 questions. The evaluation criteria are based on pronunciation, intonation and stress, grammar, vocabulary and cohesion, in addition to relevance and completeness of the content.

The Writing section takes 60 minutes to complete and includes 8 questions. It evaluates the vocabulary, grammar, organization and relevance of remarks, and to what degree the opinion is supported with reasons or examples.

Test responses are sent through a secure online system and scored by certified ETS raters, who are closely monitored throughout the process. Multiple raters score responses to the Speaking section. This ensures a level of fairness in the scoring process that traditional one-on-one interviews alone cannot provide.

Results of the test, valid for 2 years, span between 0 and 400 points (0 to 200 points for each section) and are correlated on the CEFR levels.

In today’s workplace, speaking skills are important for effective presentations, face-to-face communication and telephone conversations, while writing skills are necessary for clear, persuasive email messages and other types of business correspondence.

The TOEIC Speaking and Writing test uses common everyday vocabulary, phrases and key expressions that reflect real-world tasks. Test results provide information that enables
